The Answer to Acute Poisoning Prevention Lies in 'MSDS'... Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency Emphasizes the Importance of Understanding Material Safety Data Sheets
Chemical Substance Manufacturing, Importing, and Usage Sites Urged to Comply with Regulations
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] You must understand MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) to protect your life!
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency recently requested industrial sites manufacturing, importing, and using chemical substances to accurately prepare MSDS and thoroughly implement worker health protection measures according to the data contents, following a mass poisoning incident among workers.
The Material Safety Data Sheet is a manual for the safe use of chemical substances, containing 16 key safety information items such as composition, hazards, emergency measures, and handling methods, and is widely used as basic data for safety and health management when handling chemicals.
To prevent serious accidents like the mass poisoning incident among workers that occurred last February, it is important not only for manufacturers and importers to accurately prepare the MSDS but also for workplaces using chemicals to carefully check the MSDS and submission numbers.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency announced on the 7th that they will operate a "Material Safety Data Sheet Intensive Promotion Period" throughout June to improve awareness of the MSDS system in workplaces.
By June 10, they will produce and distribute MSDS submission system guidance materials (leaflets and stickers) to about 13,000 chemical manufacturing, importing, and workplace sites, and from June 13 to June 24, they will hold a promotional event called "Mastering the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)" through the official YouTube channel of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
Anyone can participate in the event, watch two promotional videos about the MSDS system from the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute, and answer quizzes related to the video contents. One hundred participants will be selected by lottery to receive small prizes.
Additionally, workplaces wishing to receive more detailed education on MSDS preparation methods can participate in the "MSDS Preparation and Information Delivery" training course through the Occupational Safety and Health Education Center website.
Kim Gyu-seok, Director of Industrial Accident Prevention Supervision Policy, said, "To prevent serious accidents such as acute poisoning caused by chemicals, it is fundamental that the information contained in the MSDS is accurate."

He also said, "We hope that workplaces using chemicals will familiarize themselves with the MSDS to accurately inform workers of the hazards and risks of chemicals and thoroughly implement safety and health measures such as installing local exhaust ventilation and wearing personal protective equipment."
