COVID-19 New Cases 6,172... Below 10,000 for Third Consecutive Day
117 Critically Ill Hospitalized Patients... 20 Deaths
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] During the Memorial Day holiday period, the daily number of new COVID-19 cases remained below 10,000 for the third consecutive day.
On the 7th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight, 6,172 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total cumulative cases to 18,174,880.
The daily new cases were under 10,000 for three consecutive days, with 9,835 cases on the 5th, 5,022 cases on the 6th, and continuing below 10,000 on the 7th. This is the lowest Tuesday figure in 20 weeks since January 18, when 4,068 cases were reported.
The decrease in COVID-19 testing during the holiday period appears to have influenced the numbers. On the 5th and 6th, the number of tests conducted at screening clinics was 21,644 and 19,787 respectively, which is lower than 129,804 tests on the 3rd and 73,714 tests on the 4th.
The number of critically ill patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 was 117, down by 12 from the previous day’s 129. The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 9.6%, with 7.6% in the metropolitan area and 14.7% in non-metropolitan areas.
The number of new deaths was recorded at 20, half of whom (10) were elderly aged 80 or older. The cumulative death toll stands at 24,299, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.
With 5,932 new patients added to home treatment the previous day, the total number of patients currently under home treatment is 70,424. Among them, 3,792 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions. The health monitoring for the intensive management group was reduced from twice to once daily starting from the 6th.
