“Bluefin Tuna at Flatfish Prices” Emart Introduces Fresh Bluefin Tuna Sashimi at Half Price
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Emart will offer "Yokjido Fresh Bluefin Tuna Sashimi," made from domestically produced live bluefin tuna, at a promotional price for four days from the 3rd to the 6th.
According to Emart on the 2nd, during the event period, bluefin tuna sashimi will be sold for 23,840 KRW when using the event card, and premium bluefin tuna sashimi will be sold for 34,240 KRW when using the event card.
Emart explained that considering that domestic bluefin tuna sashimi is usually sold at high-end sashimi restaurants for about 20,000 KRW per 100g, this price is about half. Emart was able to significantly reduce production and logistics costs through prior planning and bulk purchasing after negotiating with domestic bluefin tuna farms for over two years.
The Emart sashimi buyer, who first visited the bluefin tuna farm in April 2020, conducted prior planning with the farm and built a cooperative and trusting relationship. Especially since the beginning of this year, they have visited almost weekly and secured a total of 13 tons of bluefin tuna weighing around 80kg each.
Bluefin tuna is usually traded by the whole fish, and since each fish is large and particularly difficult to process, bulk purchasing is known to be rare. "Nampyeong Bluefin Tuna," which has been raising bluefin tuna since 2009 and collaborates with Emart, is trading over 3 tons at once for the first time.
This domestically produced live bluefin tuna sashimi is priced similarly to the popular flatfish sashimi. While the price of flatfish sashimi has risen compared to previous years, the bluefin tuna sashimi is discounted at a shocking price, making the prices comparable. According to the Fisheries Industry Monitoring Center of the Korea Maritime Institute, as of April this year, the farm price of Jeju flatfish was 13,131 KRW per kg, about 45% higher than 9,020 KRW in 2020.
