Daejeon City Implements Lighting Environment Management Zone to Prevent Light Pollution
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is taking measures to prevent light pollution through the implementation of the Lighting Environment Management Zone.
According to the city on the 1st, the Lighting Environment Management Zone is operated by dividing the entire Daejeon area into four types based on land use zones, applying differentiated light emission standards accordingly.
The Lighting Environment Management Zone is classified into ▲Conservation Area ▲Green Area ▲Residential Area ▲Commercial and Industrial Area, with different light emission standards applied from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise for each area.
The lighting subject to regulation includes streetlights, security lights, park lights, outdoor sports area lighting, advertising lights on permitted outdoor advertisements, decorative lighting installed on buildings over five stories or with a total floor area of 2,000㎡ or more, bridges, lodging facilities, recreational facilities, cultural assets, and artworks.
The city has granted a grace period of up to three years from the enforcement date for facilities installed before the implementation of the Lighting Environment Management Zone to improve their installations.
For more detailed information regarding the operation of the Lighting Environment Management Zone, please refer to the public notice posted on the city’s website or contact the Climate and Environmental Policy Division of the city.
Meanwhile, light pollution is known as excessive light caused by improper use of artificial lighting or light leaking outside the intended illumination area, which causes glare, disrupts biological rhythms, leads to sleep disorders, interferes with daily life, and negatively impacts the ecological environment.
According to a light pollution environmental impact assessment conducted by the city in 2020, the light pollution occurrence rate in the Daejeon area was confirmed to be 46.3%.
