Marine Industry Pride ... Busan City Promotes the '27th Sea Day' Commemorative Event
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan City will hold various events such as the ‘27th Sea Day’ and ‘Sea Week’.
Sea Day is celebrated every year on May 31st to commemorate the establishment of Cheonghaejin by the maritime king Jang Bogo during the Unified Silla period in 828.
It is a national commemorative day designated in 1996 to widely promote the importance of the sea and to enhance the pride of marine and fisheries workers.
Busan City operates Sea Week during the week of Sea Day every year to strengthen its position as a maritime capital and to prepare a foundation to respond to the changing marine environment, raising citizens’ awareness of the ocean.
To mark the 27th Sea Day this year, the Marine Natural History Museum has been holding a special exhibition titled ‘The Secret Rulers of the Sea, Seaweed’ since the 20th, highlighting the value and importance of marine algae.
On the 31st, the city will promote ‘Beachcombing to Save the Sea’ for coastal garbage collection, and on the 8th, it will hold the ‘Marine Bioindustry Development Strategy Forum’ at the 12th-floor international conference hall of City Hall. On the 9th, the ‘2022 Busan Marine Conference’ will be held.
During Sea Week, district and county offices will carry out marine cleanup activities centered around Dadaepo Beach and Gangseo-gu.
The Busan Port Development Council will propose policies for a maritime powerhouse, and the Save the Sea and River Movement Headquarters will hold nationwide literary and artistic events commemorating Sea Day, including speech contests, writing contests, art competitions, storytelling contests, and poetry recitation contests.
Kim Yoo-jin, Director of the Marine Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau of Busan City, said, “We will strive to establish Busan as a maritime capital and to make a new leap forward into the sea with infinite possibilities.”
