Seoul Police Launch Special Crackdown on Traffic Violations Involving Bicycles and Kickboards Starting Today
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that from the 30th until July, they will conduct a special crackdown on traffic violations targeting personal mobility devices (PM) such as motorcycles, bicycles, and electric kickboards for two months.
The crackdown will focus on seven types of violations derived from an analysis of major accident types involving bicycles and PMs since last year, including driving on crosswalks and crossing roads. The seven violations are ▲ driving on crosswalks ▲ crossing roads ▲ running red lights ▲ crossing the center line ▲ exceeding passenger capacity ▲ failure to protect pedestrians ▲ and drunk driving.
According to the police, traffic fatalities related to motorcycles, bicycles, and PMs from January this year to the 20th of this month increased by 47.1% compared to the same period last year. The number of drunk driving cases detected increased by 107.5% for motorcycles, and by 41.2% and 89.8% for bicycles and PMs, respectively.

The police intend to reduce accidents involving motorcycles, bicycles, and PMs through this crackdown. A Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency official stated, "Two-wheeled mobility devices on the road often lead to fatal accidents despite their easy accessibility," and urged, "We ask all drivers to recognize the risks and participate in safe driving."
