Husband Who Lost Wife in Texas Shooting Dies of Heart Attack Two Days Later
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The husband of a female teacher who died in the mass shooting at Rob Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, USA, passed away from a heart attack two days after the tragedy, major foreign media including AP News and The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 26th (local time).
According to reports, Jo Garcia (50), the husband of the deceased teacher Irma Garcia (48), was found dead from a heart attack at home after attending a memorial service that morning, the family told the NYT.
Irma, who had worked as a teacher at Rob Elementary School for 23 years, was once selected as "Teacher of the Year" and received the Trinity Education Excellence Award from Trinity University in 2019.
When she received the award, colleague Allison McCloff said, "Irma was my mentor when I first became a teacher," adding, "The wealth of knowledge and patience she showed me has changed my life."
Irma is known to have died while protecting her students during the shooting. The shooting incident at the elementary school on the 24th resulted in the deaths of 21 people, including 19 fourth-grade students and 2 teachers in the same classroom.

The Garcias, married for 24 years, had two sons and two daughters. Their eldest son is currently serving in the Marine Corps, and their second son is a student at Texas State University. Their eldest daughter and youngest child are a high school student and a middle school student, respectively.
