SKC Subsidiary MCNS Reborn as 'SK PU Core'
Expansion of Polyurethane-Based Eco-Friendly Material Business
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] SKC announced on the 26th that its polyurethane raw material subsidiary MCNS will change its name to 'SK PU Core' and enter the eco-friendly materials business.
SKC established MCNS as a joint venture with Japan's Mitsui Chemicals in 2015, and agreed to terminate the contract last September, currently operating independently. The new name SK PU Core combines polyurethane (PU) and core, meaning the essence.
SK PU Core will expand its eco-friendly polyurethane raw material business, including recycled polyols and bio polyols. Polyurethane is widely used for various purposes such as furniture, automotive interiors, refrigerators, and LPG ship insulation. However, due to economic inefficiency in collection and handling processes and difficulties in recycling, most of it has been discarded.
SK PU Core developed recycled polyol technology for the first time in Korea, obtained government New Excellent Technology (NET) certification, and commercialized recycled polyols earlier this year.
It is also promoting a bio polyol business using biological raw materials. It has commercialized bio polyols based on castor oil, a plant oil, and is collaborating with global consumer goods companies. Research and development are being strengthened to produce bio polyol products based on non-edible plant oils.
Currently, it operates production base system houses in six overseas countries including the United States, China, Poland, Mexico, and India, and plans to expand further into Southeast Asia and Latin America. The goal is to achieve sales of over 1 trillion won by 2025.

An SK PU Core official said, "We will make the eco-friendly polyurethane raw material business our core business, continuously expanding research and development and business to establish ourselves as a core player in the global market," adding, "Together with SKC, which is diversifying eco-friendly biodegradable materials and waste plastic resource projects, we will strengthen our leadership in the eco-friendly business."
