Gwangju Seo-gu Launches Smoking Cessation Campaign at U-Square Plaza
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 25th that it conducted a smoking cessation campaign at the U-Square Plaza on the 24th in commemoration of the 2022 ‘World Hypertension Day and World No Tobacco Day.’
‘World No Tobacco Day’ is observed annually on May 31st and was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of the serious harms of smoking and to promote effective tobacco control policies worldwide.
This campaign, participated in by Gwangju City and five districts, targeted local residents as well as U-Square and bus stop users, promoting smoking cessation through banner displays and encouraging smokers to quit. Educational activities were also conducted for smokers in areas with frequent complaints.
In particular, since U-Square has a large floating population and frequent complaints related to smoking, a regular monthly smoking cessation campaign is held at U-Square Plaza to prevent smoking and promote quitting.
Seo-gu is also promoting a ‘School Visiting Smoking Cessation Campaign’ targeting elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as a ‘Workplace Visiting Smoking Cessation Campaign’ for office workers, and plans to carry out various smoking cessation promotional campaigns tailored to different target groups.
A Seo-gu official stated, “We will continue to conduct ongoing promotions and campaigns to create a pleasant smoke-free environment,” adding, “With the lifting of social distancing and the resumption of health center operations, we plan to accelerate the promotion of smoking cessation projects.”
