Upstage Wins Two Silver Medals at 'AI Olympics' Kaggle Competition
19th and 41st out of 3,006 teams
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Domestic startup Upstage won two silver medals at the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Olympics' Kaggle competition.
AI startup Upstage announced on the 16th that two teams composed of its employees participated in the AI recommendation Kaggle competition hosted by the global SPA brand H&M, winning silver medals by ranking 19th and 41st respectively.
Kaggle is a data expert community owned by Google and a large-scale online AI competition platform with about 9 million participants from approximately 200 countries. In this competition, gold medals were awarded to ranks 1 to 15, and silver medals to ranks 16 to 147.
This competition, hosted by H&M, was a 'personalized fashion recommendation' challenge aimed at creating excellent AI product recommendation models based on data about global customers and products as well as previous transaction data. The competition, held over three months starting in February this year, saw a total of 3,006 teams participate.
Upstage stated that their teams improved machine learning algorithm performance by using deep learning in the stage of selecting candidate items to be recommended and retraining the model with the adopted products, achieving excellent results. They explained that by integrating existing data processing models with deep learning models to compensate for weaknesses and directly generating recommendation candidates for each customer, they achieved differentiation.
The Upstage Challenges team, which won the silver medal by ranking 19th, placed again just two weeks after winning a gold medal in the previous competition. Leader Kim Sang-hoon said, “Despite the tight schedule, we are pleased to have achieved excellent results such as a gold medal and two silver medals within a month in the Kaggle competition, which involves world-class data scientists,” adding, “Based on the technology verified through this competition, we will complete the ‘Upstage AI Pack.’”
