Democratic Party Proposes "Nation's Balance, Local Figures" as Election Slogan... Aims to Win in 8 or More Districts
The sub-slogan is 'Let's Unite for the Nation'
Strategic documents and Seoul focus intensify from early next week
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The Democratic Party's Election Countermeasures Committee announced plans to adopt the slogan "Balance of the Nation, People for the Regions" for the upcoming election.
On the 15th, Kim Min-seok, Co-General Head of the Election Committee, held a press conference at the National Assembly and stated, "The current proposal I want to suggest as General Head is 'Balance of the Nation, People for the Regions.' Since the local elections and by-elections are being held simultaneously at the beginning of the term, the public's judgment on the overall state affairs and the local elections have both become criteria for judgment, so we have comprehensively reflected both the nation and the regions."
This reflects the intention to emphasize the overall balance of state affairs to check the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and to highlight the superior candidate competitiveness presented by the Democratic Party in this election.
As a sub-slogan to be used in on-site campaigns, "Let's Unite for the Nation" was proposed. Kim explained, "On one hand, it reflects the public sentiment hoping for integration, coexistence, and cooperation, presenting the direction of state affairs and responding to the demand for unity. It also contains a message to rally the support base strongly wishing to prevent the reckless or unilateral errors of the Yoon administration and to ensure the continuous development of democracy."
Regarding the direction the Democratic Party will take after the presidential election, he said it will be a "rational responsible opposition party." He added, "Although the Democratic Party is not the ruling party, it must have a responsibility comparable to a co-ruling party, along with strong checks and preemptive capabilities as the opposition. Therefore, the Democratic Party needs to properly balance principled judgment of right and wrong, flexible cooperation, and state affairs collaboration."
He also noted, "The period after democratization in 1980 saw the most bills passed during the DJP coalition era. I believe that recognizing deeply that the current state affairs situation does not allow either the ruling or opposition party to run wild will bring wisdom from both sides."
Additionally, he stated, "We will approach the election with the utmost respect for the newlywed president who has just begun the term."
The goal for this local election was declared as "winning more than eight areas." He said, "In addition to the core bases of six to seven areas, we will strengthen strategic support for Gangwon and Chungnam. Also, to exceed nine areas, including Seoul and Yeongnam is key." To this end, starting early next week, they will focus on major strategic areas such as Sejong, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gangwon, and Chungnam, and will begin a chase in Seoul as well.
