[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonju City announced on the 12th that it will officially begin the construction of the Jeonju City Art Museum, which will serve as an art space for citizens and a hub for cultural tourism.
The Jeonju City Art Museum is planned to be built on approximately 5,500㎡ of land currently occupied by the baseball stadium at Jeonju Sports Complex, with a total floor area of about 8,000㎡, and is expected to be completed by 2025.
Jeonju City envisions the city art museum under the theme of “Glocal and Jeonju-style Community Art Museum” as a contemporary art museum that includes Korean and global trends, a space that enhances cultural enjoyment rights for various groups of Jeonju citizens, and provides tourists with special opportunities to appreciate and experience the world of art. It will be utilized as a representative tourist hub of Jeonju alongside Jeonju Hanok Village.
In this regard, Jeonju City held the first meeting of the Jeonju City Art Museum Construction Promotion Committee and Advisory Committee on the 12th at the Jeonju Mayor’s Office, with committee members attending to seek ways for the successful construction of the art museum.
The Jeonju City Art Museum Construction Promotion Committee and Advisory Committee are each composed of about 10 related experts.
The Construction Promotion Committee will play a role in deliberating and coordinating major tasks related to the construction of the city art museum, including △operation △exhibition △architecture △budget △related laws △social, cultural, and economic effects.
Prior to this, Jeonju City has been steadily proceeding with procedures for the construction of the city art museum since the first half of this year, including establishing a basic plan and conducting feasibility studies, after passing the preliminary evaluation for the establishment feasibility of a public art museum by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the first half of last year.
Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su emphasized, “We will gather opinions from not only experts but also various citizens from children to the elderly to create a plan for the city art museum that embodies Jeonju’s unique identity. We will prepare the Jeonju City Art Museum as a representative cultural and artistic space for citizens and the most Jeonju-style art museum and tourist hub to enhance the status of Jeonju as a cultural city.”
Meanwhile, the Jeonju Sports Complex, the planned site for the Jeonju City Art Museum, was built in 1963 with funds raised from citizens for the National Sports Festival. The city plans to develop facilities such as the ‘Citizen’s Forest 1963,’ which is currently under construction to return the site to the citizens, as well as the Jeonju Convention Center, Jeonju City Art Museum, department stores, and hotels.
