The Boundary Between Comics and Fine Art... Kyobo Art Space Hosts Exhibition of Three Cartoonists
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Kyobo Book Centre's exhibition space, Kyobo Art Space, will hold a group exhibition titled "Cut CUT" featuring three illustrators and cartoonists?Kim Nahum, Lee Yunhee, and Hut Hanna?from the 10th of this month until the 30th of next month.
The exhibition explores the boundary between comics and fine art. Original long-form comic books drawn with pen on paper and various prints of short comics created digitally will be displayed together.
The exhibition title "Cut" refers to the basic unit of comics, the "panel." Each artist divides, confines, or transcends the "cut" in the process of expressing stories through images, seeking the possibility that the fundamental comic unit "cut" can expand into fine art.
The participating artists present works featuring various forms of cuts. First, Kim Nahum showcases works that compress multiple situations into a "single cut." Using a method of digital work printed on canvas, these pieces navigate the boundary between "comics and painting," realistically yet humorously revealing absurd stories arising from relationships with the world.
Lee Yunhee transforms standardized "cuts" to suit narrative purposes. The modified cuts serve as devices that go beyond simple stages where stories unfold, deeply immersing viewers into the narrative. The city walkers appearing in the works gain dynamism and vitality thanks to the combination of these transformed cuts.
In contrast to Lee Yunhee, Hut Hanna uses standardized "cuts" to continuously capture the flow of time. Although the comics have minimal dialogue, the sequential "cuts" finely divided on a page repetitively show habitual actions of the characters, serving as a narrative device. The works by Hut Hanna presented this time consist of comic pages hand-drawn over several years, allowing viewers to glimpse the physical traces of time the artist invested while appreciating the pieces.
