The Presidential Transition Committee (Transition Committee) issued a statement on the 4th regarding North Korea's ballistic missile launch, calling it "a direct violation of the UN Security Council resolutions" and stating that it will "establish fundamental deterrence measures."
In a statement titled 'Position on North Korea's Ballistic Missile Launch' released that afternoon, the Transition Committee said, "North Korea once again launched a ballistic missile into the East Sea at around 12:03 today," emphasizing that "this is a direct violation of the UN Security Council resolutions and a serious provocation threatening peace not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the Northeast Asia region and internationally."
It continued, "The Transition Committee strongly condemns North Korea's provocation and once again urges an immediate halt to actions that escalate tensions and threaten international peace," adding, "The Moon Jae-in administration must devise firmer measures against such North Korean threats and protect the safety of the people."
Furthermore, it emphasized, "The Yoon Suk-yeol administration will respond strongly to North Korea's provocations through thorough cooperation between South Korea and the United States and collaboration with the international community," and "will also establish more fundamental deterrence measures against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats."
Earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea launched one ballistic missile from Sunan, Pyongyang, into the East Sea on the same day. The ballistic missile was detected flying approximately 470 km with an altitude of about 780 km. Its speed was investigated to be Mach 11. It is estimated to have flown about 500 km and landed outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
