On the 4th, the union held a dispute countermeasure committee meeting and decided to conduct both a full strike and partial strike from the 6th to the 13th. The union began its first strike of the year on the 27th of last month. At that time, the strike was scheduled to end on that day, but as labor-management negotiations stalled, the strike was extended. The union went on strike demanding renegotiation and wage increases after the first tentative agreement on the 2021 wage negotiations was rejected by union members in a vote on the 22nd of last month.
Labor and management resumed negotiations on the 2nd after about 40 days but failed to achieve any significant results. A union official said, "The management is dragging out the negotiations," adding, "We have no choice but to continue the strike."
During the strike, the union set up protest tents on roads within the Ulsan shipyard, causing partial logistics blockages and production disruptions. Representatives of in-house partner companies issued an appeal to stop the strike on the 4th and distributed it to employees at each entrance of the Ulsan shipyard.
In the appeal, the partner company representatives stated, "We have faced difficulties with work stoppages lasting over two months due to two serious accidents that occurred this year, and now, with logistics blocked by the strike, we have no choice but to halt work again." They added, "The damage to in-house partner companies has already exceeded several billion won, and losses are growing like a snowball every day," urging the union to "immediately stop the strike."
