Jeong Ho-young Hearing D-1... Will 'Dad Chance' Allegations and Welfare Expertise Be Verified?
Controversies from Column to Child Privilege in Jimin in One Day
Over 50 Clarification Documents... Attention on Verifying 'Welfare' Expertise
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] As the confirmation hearing for Jeong Ho-young, nominee for Minister of Health and Welfare, approaches in one day, attention is focused on whether all the allegations raised so far will be resolved. Jeong is scheduled to respond to suspicions related to himself and his children at the hearing on the 3rd.
From His Own 'Column Controversy' to Children's 'Favoritism Allegations'
Jeong faced controversy over a column he contributed to the Maeil Newspaper just one day after his nomination. He described "marriage and childbirth as patriotism" and "the miracle cure for cancer is marriage," pointing to women's marriage rates as the cause of Korea's low birthrate, which sparked criticism. The next day, through the Ministry of Health and Welfare, he explained that the article was written 10 years ago as a surgical professor out of concern for low birthrates. However, controversies surrounding Jeong personally continued, including a business trip to the U.S. for an alumni meeting and acquiring farmland through false residence registration.
Allegations of favoritism involving Jeong’s children followed. Suspicions arose regarding his daughter and son’s transfer admissions to Kyungpook National University (KNU) College of Medicine. Both children volunteered at the KNU hospital where Jeong worked before transferring to medical school, and this was also listed in their transfer application documents, sparking accusations of "dad’s privilege." Additionally, during the transfer process, Jeong’s daughter reportedly received a perfect score on an oral interview from a professor presumed to have a connection with her father, and his son was involved in a controversy over a paper he co-authored as the third and fourth author with his advisor during his undergraduate studies.
As the controversy over his children grew, Jeong held an emergency press conference on the 17th of last month and released about 40 pages of explanatory materials. He stated that the medical school transfer and military service procedures were conducted fairly and that there was no reason to doubt fairness based on objective evidence. Despite this, as the controversy did not subside, Jeong’s side issued about 50 explanatory documents and released statements every morning on his way to work. Regarding the military service favoritism allegations involving his son, on the 20th and 21st, his son underwent re-examinations at Severance Hospital, confirming that the 4th-degree diagnosis of herniated disc from 2015 and currently was accurate.
Even on the last weekend before the hearing, allegations and explanations about the nominee were repeated. On the 1st, additional suspicions arose that Jeong did not report conflicts of interest involving his daughter and son transferring to medical school while he held a senior position at KNU Hospital. On the same day, Jeong explained the controversy over his son being listed as the third and fourth author on a paper he wrote as an undergraduate by citing the "case of undergraduate papers in KNU IT College." Since there were a total of 322 papers involving undergraduates at KNU IT College over five years until 2020, he argued that raising suspicions solely based on undergraduate participation in papers was inappropriate.
Jeong Ho-young’s Sole Career in ‘Health and Medical Care,’ But What About Welfare Expertise?
At the hearing on the 3rd, there is also a possibility that the nominee’s expertise in welfare, which had been overshadowed by the verification of allegations, will be examined. Jeong, a graduate of KNU College of Medicine and a surgical specialist who has worked exclusively in the medical field at the medical school and KNU Hospital, has faced skepticism regarding his expertise in welfare. On the 13th of last month, civic groups including the Basic Law Rectification Joint Action issued a joint statement demanding the withdrawal of Jeong’s nomination, saying, "At a time when national welfare responses are urgently needed, Jeong’s nomination as Minister of Health and Welfare is completely inappropriate."
Jeong expressed his willingness to discuss welfare policies at the hearing. In a statement released on the 26th, he said, "I hope to have the opportunity to explain the health and welfare policies I envision at the hearing," and shared his welfare-related plans, including reforming the national pension system and preparing integrated improvement measures for the old-age income security system.
Meanwhile, critical voices toward Jeong also emerged from the People Power Party. Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoon Hee-sook said on CBS Radio on the 28th, "I’m not necessarily saying he should resign, but I hope he reflects on whether staying and strongly asserting himself will give hope to the people." She added, "I also removed my lawmaker badge and was investigated. Personally, I can understand feeling wronged, but explanations can come later."

Kim Yong-tae, a Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, demanded Jeong’s voluntary resignation. On the 29th, Kim said on YTN Radio, "I don’t think the position of minister is a place to appeal one’s grievances," and added, "I hope he quickly accepts that he does not meet the public’s common sense and expectations and makes a prompt decision himself."
