Song Young-gil "Introducing a 4-day workweek linked with remote work... Within my term, Seoul public sector to have 4-day office work and 1-day remote work"
"Allow 'Work-from-Home Linked Four-Day Workweek' in Private Sector...
Create 'Social Organization' to Develop Practical Implementation Plans"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Song Young-gil, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Seoul mayor, proposed a 'four-day workweek with remote work connection' as a pledge on May 1st, Labor Day.
On the same day, at the Seoul labor pledge announcement held at Cheonggyecheon Jeontaeil Bridge in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Candidate Song stated, "During my term as Seoul mayor, the public sector will implement a four-day in-office workweek and one day of remote or telecommuting." He explained that public institutions will continue to operate normally five days a week, but employees will only be required to come to the office four days a week.
Candidate Song pointed out, "During the period when COVID-19 was spreading, both public and private sectors introduced remote work to prevent the virus, and workers' lives changed rapidly," adding, "They were able to focus on their work without suffering through rush hour commutes and crowded trains to companies located far away."
He said, "I have been considering the introduction of 'remote work connection' as a return to normal life after COVID-19," and added, "Workers will enhance efficiency through a '4+1' rotational work system, thereby improving the quality of services that citizens deserve."
He also stated that a 'social organization' will be established to promote the active implementation of the four-day workweek with remote work connection not only in the public sector but also in the private sector, and that realistic introduction plans will be pursued. Candidate Song said, "We will prepare support measures starting with places where labor and management are conducting pilot projects."

He added, "The four-day workweek with remote work connection has already been introduced in large corporations and others. However, it is still too early to say that the working environment has changed in all public and private sectors," and continued, "If the public sector takes the lead and supports the private sector, it is expected that private companies will also be able to adopt the four-day workweek."
