President Moon: "Early Recovery to Pre-COVID Employment Levels...Thanks to Successful Quarantine Measures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in praised on Labor Day, May 1, that "the recovery of employment levels to pre-COVID-19 crisis levels was due to the success of quarantine measures."
On the same day, President Moon stated through social networking services (SNS), "The government has devoted all its efforts over the past five years to guaranteeing basic labor rights."
He cited ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) core conventions, minimum wage increases, and the implementation of the 52-hour workweek as representative examples of guaranteeing basic labor rights, evaluating that "labor distribution has greatly improved and progress has been made in work-life balance." He added, "In particular, the early recovery of employment levels to those before the COVID-19 crisis was thanks to the success of quarantine without lockdowns."
President Moon also said, "Labor must be protected by an employment safety net," expressing hope that the enforcement of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act will lead to a drastic reduction in industrial accidents.
