[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government is creating jobs in the social safety net sector to revive the livelihood economy and inject vitality, recruiting 6,600 people.
According to Seoul City on the 1st, the city will select 568 people in 62 fields such as urban manufacturing, tourism, and youth internship projects for the ‘Seoul-type New Deal Jobs’ to support industries affected by COVID-19. Additionally, 6,032 people (1,116 by Seoul City and 4,916 by 25 autonomous districts) will be selected and operated for the ‘Seoul Citizens’ Safe Jobs’ to support vulnerable employment groups such as the unemployed and small business owners who have closed or suspended operations due to COVID-19.
The Seoul-type New Deal Jobs consist of sectors urgently needing social protection and revitalization, such as small business owners, urban manufacturing, culture, arts, tourism, single-person households, and care and family services. Participants will work as local brand commercial district managers to revive neighborhood markets, digital fashion convergence talents, and welfare workers for single-person households.
The target participants for this COVID-19 affected industry support New Deal Jobs project are youth. Given the prolonged deterioration of the employment market due to the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, youth unemployment relief and substantial support for affected industries will be achieved simultaneously by deploying youth to project sites. Participants will work in positions connected to employment rather than simple task assistance, receiving the Seoul-type living wage (hourly wage of 10,770 KRW) and paid holidays for up to 23 months.
Seoul City will provide specialized job training and entrepreneurship education by two professional institutions according to each field to help link the work experience from the Seoul-type New Deal Jobs project to employment and startups. Furthermore, participants can join job matching programs even after the New Deal Jobs activity period. Costs for obtaining various certifications will also be supported up to 150,000 KRW annually.
Moreover, Seoul City and autonomous districts will operate the ‘Seoul Citizens’ Safe Jobs’ project to support vulnerable employment groups such as the unemployed and small business owners who have closed or suspended operations due to COVID-19. Among the Seoul Citizens’ Safe Jobs, the fields directly selected and operated by Seoul City include a total of 257 projects with 1,116 participants in five major categories: ▲ Restart stepping stones for closed businesses with 81 projects (262 people) ▲ Life quarantine and safety with 60 projects (255 people) ▲ Digital transformation with 7 projects (109 people) ▲ Green environment with 45 projects (357 people) ▲ Public services with 64 projects (133 people).

Hwang Bo-yeon, Director of Seoul City’s Economic Policy Office, said, “These jobs are not simply created by injecting tax money but are designed to support the recovery of vulnerable employment groups and discover workplaces where youth desperately seeking jobs can gain work experience.” He added, “We hope these jobs will strengthen Seoul’s social safety net while revitalizing the livelihood economy field, becoming a stepping stone for overcoming the difficulties of COVID-19 and advancing forward.”
