Korean Island Promotion Agency Actively Responds to Island Disappearance by Building Database
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Amid accelerating regional extinction due to low birth rates and the COVID-19 situation, the Korea Island Promotion Agency (Director Oh Dong-ho), the control tower for domestic island policy, is launching a study on mid- to long-term response measures to island population decline.
They also plan to establish a systematic and reliable island statistics network to propose practical policies for island residents. Additionally, they will analyze the domestic island industrial structure and prepare measures to revitalize it.
The Korea Island Promotion Agency announced on the 28th that it held the ‘2022 2nd Basic Task Kickoff Report Meeting’ at the agency’s video conference room, attended by Director Oh Dong-ho, research review committee members, and related personnel from Hanseomwon.
This kickoff report meeting was a follow-up to the first policy task kickoff report meeting held in March and included five core tasks.
At the meeting, reports were presented on five research tasks: ▲ Customized industrial development and regional vitality enhancement plans for island areas ▲ Research on the establishment and operation of an island database (Island DB) ▲ Analysis of the current status of island support projects ▲ Study on mid- to long-term response measures to island population decline ▲ Research on the actual conditions of parcel delivery use in island areas and improvement plans.
With this, the Korea Island Promotion Agency’s basic research tasks for this year have increased to seven, including the ‘Performance Evaluation for the Efficiency of Island Development Projects’ and the ‘Study on Innovation Measures for Island Transportation Systems’ as the first policy task.

Director Oh Dong-ho said, “The poor island DB construction, parcel delivery usage conditions, and response measures to island population decline included in this kickoff report meeting are among the most important tasks,” adding, “I hope that the basic tasks of Hanseomwon will be carried out solidly and lead to practical policy research and development that can contribute to improving the quality of life of island residents and the promotion and development of islands.”
