China says Biden's Japan-South Korea tour should not create exclusive small groups
Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on U.S. President Joe Biden's visits to South Korea and Japan, stating, "Exclusive small groups should not be formed, nor should mutual trust and cooperation among regional countries be undermined."
At a regular briefing on the 28th, when asked for his opinion on the matter, Wang said, "China has maintained that cooperation between countries and regional initiatives should align with the general trend and contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity."
Regarding the Quad, he said, "It is filled with outdated Cold War thinking," adding, "It has a strong military confrontation tone, goes against the current trend of the times, and will fail to gain popular support."
Earlier, the White House announced on the 27th (local time) that President Biden will visit South Korea and Japan from the 20th to the 24th of next month. President Biden will hold a South Korea-U.S. summit in Seoul on the 21st, a U.S.-Japan summit in Tokyo on the 23rd, and attend the Quad summit held the following day. The Quad is regarded as a security consultation body among the U.S., Japan, Australia, and India aimed at countering China.
Meanwhile, this trip marks President Biden's first visit to East Asia, and it is notable that he will visit South Korea before Japan. Historically, when U.S. presidents make their first visit to East Asia after taking office, Japan has often been the first destination. Choosing South Korea as the first stop is interpreted as an indication of the Biden administration's emphasis on the importance of the South Korea-U.S. relationship.

The South Korea-U.S. summit will be held just 11 days after the inauguration, the shortest period ever after the launch of a new government. This signifies that the basic framework for South Korea-U.S. relations during the five-year Yoon Seok-yeol administration can be established immediately after taking office.
