Half of Spam Types Are Stock·Investment and Loan Solicitations
Rising Trend of Daeriunjeon Spam Since March
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Spam reports surpassed 8 million from January to March this year, marking an all-time high.
According to the first-quarter spam statistics announced on the 28th by WhoWho & Company, which provides the spam blocking application 'WhoWho,' 8.1 million spam reports were received in the first quarter. This represents an increase of approximately 1.27 million compared to the same period last year and about 310,000 compared to the previous quarter. It is the first time since the related statistics have been compiled that spam reports have exceeded 8 million on a quarterly basis.
Spam related to stock/investment and loan solicitation types alone exceeded 5 million, accounting for more than half of the total reports in the first quarter. The most reported type was stock/investment, recording about 3.07 million cases in the first quarter. Loan solicitation followed with about 1.94 million cases.
The stock/investment type increased by more than 1 million cases over one year, from 1.93 million in the first quarter last year to surpass 3 million cases quarterly. In contrast, loan solicitation type recorded 1.91 million cases in the first quarter last year, peaked at about 2.4 million in the third quarter of the same year, and then turned to a downward trend. The loan solicitation type showed a decline for two consecutive quarters and fell below 2 million cases for the first time since the first quarter of last year.
Another notable point in the first-quarter statistics is the rise in designated driver spam in March. This was influenced by the gradual easing of quarantine measures, with the number of designated driver spam reports in March rising 95% compared to the previous month to about 4,000 cases, recovering to the level of the end of the previous year.
