CU Launches Korean Beef Ready Meal Commemorating 90th Anniversary of Yoon Bong-gil's Assassination Attempt
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Convenience store CU is launching a ready-to-eat meal series featuring Korean beef to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the assassination attempt by independence activist Yun Bong-gil. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Maehun Yun Bong-gil Memorial Project Association.
According to BGF Retail on the 26th, the company planned this product in collaboration with the memorial project association to honor Yun, who sacrificed his life for independence, and to contribute to spreading correct historical awareness.
The 90th anniversary commemorative ready-to-eat meal series includes a lunchbox (6,900 KRW), triangular gimbap (1,500 KRW), gimbap (3,500 KRW), and hamburger (4,500 KRW), all made with Korean beef bulgogi. This concept was inspired by the story that Baekbeom Kim Gu personally procured beef and gave it to Gim Hae-san so that it could be served to Yun on the day of his assassination attempt.
All products feature designs including photos of Yun meeting Kim Gu and joining the Korean Patriotic Corps, along with phrases marking the 90th anniversary of the assassination attempt.
In particular, a portion of the sales from these products will be donated to the Maehun Yun Bong-gil Memorial Project Association. BGF Retail will additionally support the same amount as the sales donation through a matching grant. The funds raised will be used for educational programs on the history of the independence movement and scholarship projects that promote the legacy of Yun Bong-gil.
Furthermore, starting from the 29th and for three months, CU will display related commemorative promotional materials on the POS (point of sale) screens at over 16,000 stores nationwide to help more customers learn about and honor the 90th anniversary of Yun Bong-gil’s assassination attempt.
Jo Seong-wook, head of BGF Retail’s ready-to-eat food team, said, “We planned this product to honor the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs on the 90th anniversary of Yun Bong-gil’s assassination attempt on the 29th and to make it a day for our people to unite once again. We will continue to develop products with historical significance and lead efforts to promote Korea to customers visiting CU.”
