On the 24th, the Chuncheon District Court (Criminal Division 2, Presiding Judge Park Jinyoung) announced that it sentenced traffic police officer A (32), who was indicted on charges of forgery of electronic records and use of forged electronic records, to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.
Previously, in September 2018, Officer A was in charge of investigating a traffic accident on a one-lane road in Gangwon, where a passenger car crossed the center line and collided with a motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction.
Although the motorcycle driver sustained injuries requiring about 6 to 8 weeks of treatment, Officer A, upon realizing that the perpetrator was an active-duty police officer, falsely entered the accident details into the Traffic Control System (TCS) as a "property damage accident caused by a passenger car crossing the center line and hitting a motorcycle."
The court judged that Officer A, during the investigation, confirmed that the perpetrator was a fellow active-duty police officer and decided to close the internal investigation by changing the case from a personal injury accident to a property damage accident, among other acts.

The court stated, "The defendant, as a police officer responsible for traffic investigation duties, must thoroughly and accurately investigate and examine all assigned cases, and the culpability is not light. However, considering that the defendant has belatedly reflected on his wrongdoing and there is no evidence suggesting he received any solicitations or gained improper benefits related to this case," it explained the reasons for sentencing.
