[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] A commemorative event wishing for the successful hosting of the Jeonnam Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo was held on the afternoon of the 23rd at the Suncheon Bay Dalbam Night Market in Jeonnam, one year before the opening.
The event was attended by Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam, Suncheon city officials, Kim Sung-gon, Chairman of the Overseas Koreans Foundation, Congressman So Byung-chul, Nam Tae-heon, Deputy Director of the Korea Forest Service, and advisory board members of the organizing committee.
The family of the British designer (deceased) who designed the 2013 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo and the landmark 'Suncheon Bay Lake Park' of Suncheon Bay National Garden also attended, drawing attention.
The event was organized as a citizen participation type. Following pre-cultural events, an opening ceremony, and congratulatory performances, all attendees united in a candle lighting performance wishing for the successful hosting of the expo.
Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam, said, "The garden culture industry is a promising future industry as much as high-tech industries and a new growth engine for South Korea. We will carefully oversee every process and provide strong support to ensure the expo, which is one year away, is held without any setbacks."
The 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo will be held for six months from April 22 to October 22, 2023, throughout the Suncheon Bay National Garden and the Dongcheon riverside, as well as the entire downtown area of Suncheon.
More than 30 countries will participate, and it is estimated that 8 million domestic and international visitors will attend. An economic ripple effect of about 1.5 trillion won and employment effects for about 20,000 people are expected.

A Jeonnam provincial official said on the 24th, "If the 2013 expo rooted garden culture and industry, the 2023 expo will be a turning point to leap forward as a global center of garden culture and industry, like the UK's 'Chelsea Flower Show' or France's 'Chaumont International Garden Festival.' We are working hard on renewing the national garden to ensure the successful hosting of the expo."
