Advice Drawn from Experience in Inaugural Speech on the 21st Draws Attention
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] Lee Chang-yong, the newly appointed Governor of the Bank of Korea, emphasized 'work-life balance' at the inauguration ceremony on the 21st, receiving strong support from the staff.
At the inauguration held in the convention hall on the first floor of the Booyoung Taepyeong Building in Jung-gu, Seoul, Governor Lee stated, "I recently experienced significant health difficulties due to COVID-19." He had been hospitalized for seven months last year in the United States after contracting COVID-19.
Governor Lee said, "The position of Governor of the Bank of Korea represents a precious opportunity to use my second life meaningfully," adding, "I feel a heavy responsibility in taking on this important role at a critical time, but I am grateful to be able to serve the nation and the Bank of Korea's development."
In his inaugural speech, he called for the expansion and transformation of the Bank of Korea's role while offering heartfelt advice not to lose sight of the importance of health and family, drawing attention.
Governor Lee advised, "I used to believe that working hard outside would be good for home, but through my painful experience, I have come to believe in the value of work-life balance," and added, "I hope you do not forget that health and bonds with family are precious assets." He conveyed that finding a balance between work and life while working effectively is not impossible.
He continued, "From my own experience of illness, I hope (Bank of Korea staff) do not get sick but feel deeply," emphasizing, "Time with family cannot be reversed." The sincere advice from his personal experience was met with loud applause from the staff.

Governor Lee received his appointment letter from President Moon Jae-in in the morning and officially took office in the afternoon. His term is four years, until April 20, 2026.
