[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hyundai Motor Company is officially sponsoring the FIFA World Cup, the dream stage for soccer players worldwide, by providing eco-friendly vehicles such as the Ioniq 5.
Hyundai announced on the 21st that it will act as an official sponsor of the ‘2022 FIFA World Cup,’ held from November 21 to December 18 at eight stadiums across five major cities in Qatar, including Doha, Al Khor, and Al Wakrah.
As part of its five core focus areas, Hyundai is striving to achieve carbon neutrality at the 2022 FIFA World Cup through its ‘social carbon reduction activities.’ To realize a carbon-neutral World Cup, Hyundai is focusing on eco-friendly initiatives in partnership with FIFA, sharing a sustainability vision beyond mere brand exposure and vehicle provision.
During the tournament, Hyundai plans to provide a total of 592 official vehicles, including 422 passenger cars and 170 buses, to offer the best convenience to national teams, VIPs, and event officials. Approximately 50% of the passenger cars will be eco-friendly vehicles such as the Ioniq 5, which won the 2022 World Car of the Year, as well as the Santa Fe Hybrid, Tucson Hybrid, and Sonata Hybrid. For buses, Hyundai will supply 10 Elec City electric buses. This is the first time eco-friendly vehicles are being used as official vehicles at the FIFA World Cup.
Additionally, Hyundai will launch the ‘Goal of the Century’ campaign on Earth Day, April 22, symbolizing its commitment to creating a sustainable world united through soccer. The campaign video released by Hyundai conveys a message beyond soccer goals ? a greater objective to redraw humanity’s future and unite for a sustainable world.
To support this campaign, Hyundai has launched ‘Team Century,’ captained by former England national soccer team player Steven Gerrard. Team Century includes members with expertise in various fields: Hyundai’s global brand ambassadors BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), Afghan refugee and Danish UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador footballer Nadia Nadim, renowned American fashion designer Jeremy Scott, Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, eco-friendly photographer Niki Wu, and Boston Dynamics’ robot Spot.
Each Team Century member will establish goals in their respective fields to create a sustainable future for the planet and a carbon-neutral World Cup, recruiting supporters and engaging in diverse activities. The final lineup of Team Century will be announced in July.
Steven Gerrard said, “As a father of four, protecting the world for future generations is one of my life’s goals. I am happy and proud to participate in this journey to create a sustainable world. Soccer has the power to move people toward achieving our goal of a sustainable Earth.”
Furthermore, to commemorate the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Hyundai will operate test drive events focusing on eco-friendly vehicles at its global subsidiaries and dealerships from July to September. Following this, the ‘Hyundai Motor Goal of the Century Pledge’ event, linked to the campaign message, will be held on the official FIFA website from July through the end of the year. This pledge event encourages soccer fans to engage in eco-friendly activities for a sustainable future. Participants can pledge an eco-friendly action they will take if the country they support among the 32 teams in the 2022 FIFA World Cup scores a goal.
Hyundai and FIFA will select 11 winners by lottery from participants who enter the event by the end of September. The 11 winners will receive a live viewing package (including one companion) to watch their supported team’s match directly at the stadium. Participants who do not win the live viewing package can fulfill their pledges during the World Cup, upload proof on social media with hashtags, and enter a draw to receive campaign merchandise.
