"Second Half Overseas Travel Bookings Surge" Interpark Tour Analyzes 2022 Domestic and International Travel Trends
Social Distancing Lifted After 2 Years and 1 Month... Accommodation Bookings Increase Amid Peak Travel Season
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Following the exemption from quarantine and the lifting of social distancing measures, domestic and international travel is expected to enter a full-fledged upward trend.
According to Interpark Tour on the 20th, an analysis of overseas flight ticket reservations for about a month after the quarantine exemption showed that from March 21 to April 17, overseas flight ticket reservations increased by 133% compared to the same period last month.
Looking at the growth rates by major routes, Oceania, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas routes rose by 193%, 178%, 129%, and 115%, respectively.
Oceania, which includes resort destinations such as Guam and Saipan, continued to show strong performance. The popularity of Europe and the Americas remained steady. Southeast Asia, where travel has not yet fully resumed, is expected to reopen sequentially in the second half of the year, leading to a significant increase in advance reservations and a sharp rise in growth rate.
Package tour reservations have also steadily increased. From April 1 to 17, the regional share of package reservations was analyzed as Southeast Asia (32.8%), Europe (22.7%), Guam and Saipan (20.2%), Mediterranean (20%), Americas and Oceania (4%), and others (0.3%).
Additionally, during the same period (April 1?17), domestic accommodation reservations nationwide also increased compared to the same period last month. The growth rates by major regions were Gangwon (104.7%), Busan (101.2%), Chungcheong (101%), Jeolla (86.6%), Gyeongsang (86.3%), Gyeonggi (74.3%), Incheon (52%), Jeju (47.3%), and Seoul (45.3%), in that order.
Reservations were high mainly in Gangwon and Jeju, known as representative domestic travel destinations, and the metropolitan area. Furthermore, due to the increase in spring travelers and the issuance of discount coupons for the Korea Accommodation Festival, accommodation bookings surged, evenly distributing travel demand nationwide.

An Interpark Tour official said, "As domestic travel preference remains high, the popularity of domestic travel is expected to continue throughout the remaining second half of the year. Although overseas routes are just beginning to recover flight operations, making it premature to say there is a high demand for immediate departures, it is predicted that overseas travel will gain more momentum as flight operations expand in the second half of the year."
