A father in his 30s was arrested by the police for slapping his newborn baby on the palm because the baby was whining without sleeping.

The Dongbu Police Station in Gwangju announced on the 20th that they have booked and are investigating Mr. A (35) on charges of child abuse under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
Mr. A is accused of hitting the head of his 4-month-old son once with his palm at his home in Bongseon-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju, around 1 a.m. that day.
According to the police investigation, Mr. A assaulted the child in a fit of anger because the child was crying and not sleeping after receiving a vaccination.
The child lost consciousness after the assault and was taken to the hospital emergency room, where the emergency room doctor suspected child abuse and reported it to the police.
The child showed symptoms of subdural hemorrhage (brain hemorrhage) and is reported to require surgery.
The Nam-gu Office’s child abuse department, which received the report, plans to investigate whether Mr. A, who is raising five young children, has abused his other children as well.

The police stated that, according to guidelines that cases of child abuse involving children under 13 years old are to be investigated by a dedicated team at the provincial police agency, this case has been transferred to the Gwangju Police Agency for further investigation.
