BOK Launches 'Bank of Korea Banknote Denomination Identification Assistant' App for Visually Impaired
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] The Bank of Korea and the National Forensic Service announced on the 19th that they have jointly developed the 'Bank of Korea Banknote Denomination Identification Assistant' app for the visually impaired, which will be released on the 20th in celebration of the 42nd Disability Day.
This app is a mobile application that assists visually impaired individuals in identifying the denominations of banknotes. When the app is launched and the camera is pointed at a banknote, it provides audio guidance (including whether it is the front or back side) and vibration feedback indicating the denomination.
It can distinguish among 29 types of Bank of Korea banknotes currently in circulation (excluding commemorative banknotes). For faster recognition, setting the app to basic mode allows identification of only the four current banknotes and the three immediately preceding series. However, it cannot verify counterfeit bills.

The Bank of Korea stated, "Although there are many apps on the market that assist visually impaired people in identifying banknote denominations, most are paid or do not support Korean banknotes. We expect this app to greatly improve the convenience of cash usage for visually impaired people in Korea who have had difficulties identifying banknote denominations."
