Gyeonggi Agricultural Research Institute, Early Blooming of Pear Blossoms... "Concerns Over Abnormal Low Temperature and Poor Pollination"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The blooming period of pear blossoms in Gyeonggi Province has advanced by 8 to 10 days compared to the average year, raising concerns about pollination failure due to abnormal low temperatures.
The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services recently stated on the 18th that the blooming period of pear blossoms has advanced by 8 to 10 days compared to the average year due to high temperatures, and urged preparations for abnormal low temperatures during the blooming period that may occur in the future.
According to the Agricultural Research and Extension Services, pear blossoms in the Gyeonggi area usually bloom after mid-April based on the average year, but this year, due to rising temperatures, some farms have confirmed blooming 8 to 10 days earlier than usual.
However, if temperatures temporarily drop, there are concerns about damage such as pollination failure caused by abnormal low temperatures.
Therefore, the Agricultural Research and Extension Services explained that measures to increase fruit yield, such as securing pollen for artificial pollination and releasing pollinating bees, are necessary.
In areas where low temperatures or late frost are expected or where damage frequently occurs, it is advised to burn rice husks to eliminate cold air or use wind fans to circulate warm air in the upper layers to prevent cold damage.
When abnormal low temperatures occur during the blooming period, the activity of pollinating insects may decrease, causing fruit not to set, so artificial pollination is also recommended.

Jogeumsoon, head of the Technology Extension Division at the Agricultural Research and Extension Services, urged, "In preparation for damage caused by abnormal low temperatures during the blooming period, secure enough pollen and perform artificial pollination multiple times to ensure fruit yield if damage occurs."
