KIPO Hosts 'Campus Patent Universiade'... Google Korea Newly Participates

View original image[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office announced on the 18th that it will accept applications for participation in the '2022 Campus Patent Universiade' competition from May 19 to June 9.
The Patent Universiade is held in a format where university (graduate) students utilize patented technologies owned by companies to establish commercialization and research and development strategies and compete. This competition has been held for the 15th time with the purpose of discovering and nurturing intellectual property talents needed by companies.
Especially this year, Google Korea and Korea Water Resources Corporation are newly participating. Including these, 30 companies have prepared 41 problems related to promising technologies such as cloud, future mobility, and secondary batteries, allowing participants to establish commercialization and research and development strategies.
Prize winners of the competition will receive prize money and special benefits that can give them preferential treatment when employed by sponsoring companies.
The prize money is 15 million KRW for the Presidential Award winner and 12 million KRW for the Prime Minister Award winner.
Additionally, the university producing the most awardees will receive the Korean Council of Engineering Deans President's Award and 2 million KRW, the university with the most applicants will receive the Korea Invention Promotion Association President's Award and 2 million KRW, and the advisors leading the top 12 award-winning teams will each receive the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award and 1 million KRW in prize money.

Jung Yeon-woo, Director of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, said, "The Korean Intellectual Property Office will continue to support university (graduate) students to grow into talents equipped with intellectual property capabilities by cooperating with the industry."
Meanwhile, last year, a total of 1,747 teams participated in the Patent Universiade, and 123 teams from 27 universities received awards.
The employment rate of graduating awardees from the 2020 competition was 74.6%, surpassing the employment rate of 67.7% for general engineering graduates.

In particular, the team from Seoul National University of Science and Technology that won the Presidential Award that year also achieved the result of founding a soundproof product development solution company based on the idea they submitted to the competition.
