June Local Election Gyeongnam District Delimitation, Ruling and Opposition Parties Agree... New Election Districts Established in Changwon, Yangsan, Jinju, Gimhae, etc.
Pilot Introduction of Medium Multi-member Constituency System in 11 Regions Nationwide
Clause Splitting 4-member Constituencies into 2-member Constituencies Deleted
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Se-ryeong] In the upcoming nationwide local elections in June, the number of regional council members in Gyeongnam Province will increase from the current 52 to 58.
This is the result of the final agreement reached on the 14th between the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party to amend the Public Official Election Act necessary for the June local election district delineation.
The two parties decided to create two new electoral districts each in Changwon and Yangsan, and one each in Jinju and Gimhae.
Due to the Constitutional Court's decision, the electoral districts in Haman, Changnyeong, Goseong, and Geochang counties, which were at risk of being reduced, will maintain the current two districts, and the single electoral district in Uiryeong County will also be preserved.
The medium-large electoral district system, which sets the number of basic council members between three and five, will be piloted in 11 electoral districts nationwide, including four in Seoul, three in Gyeonggi, one in Incheon, one in Yeongnam, one in Honam, and one in Chungcheong.
It was agreed to delete the clause in Article 26, Paragraph 4, latter part of the current Public Official Election Act that allows the division of four-member electoral districts.
The number of metropolitan and basic council members will be increased to 38 and 48 respectively to resolve the constitutional incompatibility under the current election law and to secure representation for rural and fishing areas.
