Daewoo Shipbuilding Wins Order for 2 LNG Carriers... "Achieves Half of This Year's Target in 4 Months"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has secured orders for two LNG carriers, achieving more than half of its annual order target within four months this year.
On the 15th, DSME announced that it had received orders for two LNG carriers worth 526.3 billion KRW from an Oceania-based shipowner. These vessels will be built at the Okpo Shipyard and are scheduled for delivery by the second half of 2026.
The ordered vessels are large LNG carriers with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, equipped with low-pressure dual-fuel engines (ME-GA) and reliquefaction systems, making them eco-friendly ships that significantly reduce emissions of air pollutants. All 18 vessels DSME has secured orders for this year are dual-fuel ships, reflecting high market recognition.
DSME's streak of LNG ship orders continues. Having contracted 12 vessels so far this year, it is expected to surpass last year's total of 15 vessels. According to Clarkson Research, a specialized maritime research institute, out of the 686 LNG carriers currently in operation, DSME has built 176 vessels (approximately 26%), the highest number among shipyards worldwide.
Additionally, DSME has secured approximately 4.61 billion USD worth of orders, including six container ships, one offshore plant, and one repair and maintenance project, achieving about 51.8% of its 8.9 billion USD target. This performance is more than double the 2.2 billion USD secured during the same period last year.
