India Likely Invited to G7 Summit... Host Germany Considering
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Germany, the chair country of this year's Group of Seven (G7) summit, is reportedly leaning towards inviting India to the meeting scheduled for June, Bloomberg reported on the 12th (local time).
The news agency, citing sources familiar with the situation, reported that Germany is considering whether to invite India, which is reluctant to join sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, to the G7 summit.
Germany plans to invite Senegal, South Africa, and Indonesia as guests to the Bavaria meeting, but is still deliberating on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India was one of about 50 countries that abstained from the vote to expel Russia from the UN Human Rights Council and has not joined the sanctions against Russia.
A government spokesperson stated that the final list of attendees for this meeting will be announced once confirmed, adding, "The Prime Minister has made it clear that he wants as many international partners as possible to participate in the sanctions."
The G7 countries are leading the sanctions against Russia, with some sending weapons to Ukraine. In Germany's case, strong measures have been taken to reduce imports of Russian energy, but companies within Germany still rely on Russian natural gas for power supply.
