First Domestic Case of Recombinant Variant XL Infection Reported in Jeonnam
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The first domestic case of infection with the Omicron recombinant variant virus (XL) has occurred in Jeonnam.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 12th, Mr. A (in his 40s) was infected with the Omicron recombinant variant virus (XL).
Mr. A was confirmed positive through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on the 23rd of last month, and the XL infection was additionally revealed through genetic analysis conducted by the Central Disease Control Headquarters' testing and analysis team.
Mr. A had received the third vaccination dose and was reported to have no related symptoms.
Currently, among the 81 people who had contact with Mr. A, the Central Disease Control Headquarters is conducting genetic analysis tests on 17 individuals.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters conducted tests on 30,438 randomly selected cases nationwide and 578 cases in Jeonnam over the past month.

XL was first discovered in the UK in February and, as of yesterday, 66 cases have been confirmed only in the UK. Compared to Omicron, there is no significant difference in transmissibility and severity, but it is known for having an infection speed 9.8 times faster.
