Yoon Elected President to Announce 8 Cabinet Picks Including Deputy Prime Minister for Economy at 2 PM
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol will announce part of the new government's cabinet appointments, including the Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Economy and Finance, on the 10th.
According to the transition committee, President-elect Yoon will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. that day to announce the cabinet appointments. Jang Je-won, the chief secretary to the president-elect, also met with reporters in front of the transition committee office in the morning and said, "It seems some appointments will be announced today," adding, "About eight people will be announced."
However, when asked about the appointment of the chief secretary, he replied, "It is not included." Accordingly, the 'economic lineup,' led by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Economy and Finance, is expected to be revealed, with the possibility of also announcing the Chairperson of the Financial Services Commission and the Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs in the Presidential Office.
Currently, Chu Kyung-ho, a member of the People Power Party and the secretary of the Planning and Coordination Subcommittee of the transition committee, has been virtually nominated as the Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Economy and Finance. Chu is a seasoned economic official recognized for his capabilities, having served as Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Commission during the Lee Myung-bak administration and as First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance during the Park Geun-hye administration. In the political sphere, Chu served as a member of the 20th and 21st National Assembly, actively participating in the Planning and Finance Committee and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts, and recently served as the floor leader, making him well-equipped to respond to opposition party attacks. Considering the burden of confirmation hearings, there was also an opinion that a current lawmaker should take the position.
For the candidate for Chairperson of the Financial Services Commission, Choi Sang-mok, president of Nonghyup University and secretary of the Economic Subcommittee 1 of the transition committee, is most frequently mentioned. Choi served as First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance during the Park Geun-hye administration.
