On the 30th, Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, delivered 1,000 kg of fresh Bujikkaengi spring greens from Ulleung Island to nine COVID-19 base hospitals in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas (Kyungpook National University Hospital, Dongsan Hospital, Yeungnam University Hospital, Daegu Catholic University Hospital, Daegu Medical Center, Gyeongsangbuk-do Pohang Medical Center, Pohang St. Mary’s Hospital, Good Sunrin Hospital, and Pohang Semyung Christian Hospital).
Being a remote island far from the mainland, the transportation process was challenging. From Ulleung Island, the Bujikkaengi namul was loaded into refrigerated trucks and transported by cargo ship, requiring great care to maintain freshness.
Known as a tonic on the dining table, Bujikkaengi namul is a representative spring vegetable of Ulleung Island. Fresh raw greens can be blanched and eaten, and it can also be prepared in various dishes such as muknamul (seasoned dried vegetables) or jangajji (pickled vegetables).
Bujikkaengi has a unique taste and flavor and is known to be effective as an antipyretic diuretic and to boost vitality.
Ham In-seok, director of Pohang Medical Center in Gyeongbuk, said, “Last year, we also received delicious Bujikkaengi namul from Ulleung Island, and we are grateful that fresh Bujikkaengi namul was gifted again this year without forgetting us.”
Director Ham expressed repeated thanks, saying, “It was a great comfort and encouragement to the medical staff and others working hard to protect the precious lives of the people from COVID-19.”
Kim Byung-su, mayor of Ulleung-gun, said, “We deeply appreciate the hard work of medical staff in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, and we hope that the nutritious Bujikkaengi produced in the pristine Ulleung area will stimulate the medical staff’s appetite and help them regain strength.”
