Coupang Delivery Worker Killed After Being Hit by Truck
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A woman in her 40s who was delivering by bicycle was hit by a truck and died.
According to the Seocho Police Station in Seoul on the 30th, at around 12:20 PM that day, a woman in her 40s, Ms. A, a delivery worker using an electric bicycle, died in an accident at the intersection near the Express Bus Terminal in Seocho-gu. It was confirmed that Ms. A had been delivering food using an electric bicycle for Coupang Eats.
Ms. A died at the scene, and the driver of the 5-ton truck, a man in his 40s, Mr. B, was confirmed not to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The police stated, "We will thoroughly investigate the case and decide what charges to apply based on the results."
It is known that Ms. A had been delivering food using an electric bicycle for Coupang Eats.
The Delivery Platform Branch of the General Service Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Service Federation said, "This incident is an inevitable accident resulting from Coupang Eats' safety negligence policy," and added, "Coupang Eats contracts with delivery workers because they are platform workers, but does not take responsibility for their safety."

They also stated, "The policy that drives delivery workers to death must be stopped immediately, and all funeral expenses for the deceased must be paid," and added, "The government should engage in social dialogue with labor unions to prepare measures on delivery workers' safety issues, especially regarding accidents."
