Asiana Airlines Sees Sharp Increase in International Flight Bookings: "80% Growth in Two Weeks"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Following the announcement of the lifting of quarantine measures for incoming travelers, Asiana Airlines' international flight ticket reservations have increased by more than 80% in total.
According to Asiana Airlines on the 29th, comparing reservations made from the 11th to the 24th, after the quarantine lifting announcement, with those made during the two weeks prior to the announcement, reservations increased by over 80%. This is the largest increase within two years since route reductions due to the spread of COVID-19.
On the 11th, the government announced its plan to lift the 7-day self-quarantine requirement for all overseas arrivals, which had been in place since the emergence of the Omicron variant, starting from the 21st.
By route, reservations increased by 100% on routes to the Americas and Europe, and by over 80% on Southeast Asia routes. Considering the recovery in travel demand and the effect of route expansions, reservations are expected to continue increasing significantly.
In particular, the Incheon~Hawaii route showed an immediate effect from the quarantine lifting. Reservations for the Hawaii route increased by more than 200% within two weeks following the announcement on the 11th. This reflects both the pent-up overseas travel demand during the COVID-19 period and postponed honeymoon travel demand.
Additionally, routes such as ▲Incheon~LA ▲Incheon~New York ▲Incheon~Frankfurt ▲Incheon~Ho Chi Minh ▲Incheon~Bangkok, mainly long-haul and business routes, showed an average reservation increase rate of over 110%.
Along with this, the Incheon~LA route will increase flights by one per week starting May 1 to enhance customer convenience, expanding from 10 to 11 weekly flights. Also, the preferred daytime flights will be adjusted from 3 to 7 times per week. This is expected to attract more transfer passengers traveling from the US to Southeast Asia via Korea, contributing to the activation of Incheon International Airport’s hub function.
According to a survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on the 17th, 38 out of the world's top 50 air travel markets allow quarantine-free entry for vaccinated travelers. This global trend, combined with the domestic lifting of quarantine measures, is expected to sustain the recovery of overseas travel demand.
An Asiana Airlines official stated, “International flight reservations are significantly increasing following the lifting of overseas entry quarantine,” and added, “We will strive to offer various travel schedules to customers planning trips for the first time in two years.”
