Gyeongnam Province operates a dedicated agency to help young adults preparing for independence who have lived in child welfare facilities or foster families and whose protection ends at the age of 18.
The opening ceremony was attended by Ha Byungpil, Acting Governor of Gyeongnam Province, Kim Hayong, Chairman of the Provincial Council, Lee Youngsil, Vice Chairman of the Culture and Welfare Committee of the Provincial Council, Kim Kyungyoung, Provincial Council Member, Song Yangsu, Director of the Child Rights Division of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Kim Woongcheol, Secretary General of the social welfare corporation Good Neighbors.
Heads of child welfare facilities and young adults preparing for independence participated through a live broadcast on Gyeongnam Province's YouTube channel.
The Independent Support Dedicated Agency will systematically support young adults whose protection has ended to prepare for independence over five years.
It provides customized support by identifying the individual characteristics and needs of the youth, offering tailored information on housing, education, health, and employment or entrepreneurship.
The agency continuously monitors the youth to provide post-independence management, builds support systems such as senior independents and mentors to jointly address difficulties encountered during the independence process, and helps with emotional stability.
Before independence, it identifies the child's desire for independence and shares related information so they can prepare to leave the protection institution or foster family and become independent.
Gyeongnam Province announced that for the first time this year, it will support the academic conditions of young adults preparing for independence by providing 2 million KRW for stable university life funds and expanding the settlement support fund from 5 million KRW to 8 million KRW.
To help young adults prepare a home, the province plans to support rental deposit funds in cooperation with LH Korea Land and Housing Corporation.
