[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] The Jeju Provincial Party of the People Power Party has called for a thorough investigation into the recent allegations that "Democratic Party of Korea National Assembly member A received signatures for 'consent to run for governor' during the last presidential election period."
On the 24th, the Jeju Provincial Party of the People Power Party issued a statement titled ‘Regarding the Democratic Party of Korea’s prospective gubernatorial candidate and violations of the Public Official Election Act,’ stating, "On the 19th, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Election Commission received a complaint alleging that persons associated with prospective gubernatorial candidate A violated the prohibition on signature and seal campaigns under the Public Official Election Act."
The Jeju Provincial Party said, “The documents attached to the complaint consist of four A4 pages containing names, phone numbers, gender, and residences,” adding, “At the top of the document, the phrase ‘Consent to run for 000 Governor’ is written, and it contains information that three individuals known to be close aides of candidate A planned the creation of documents titled ‘Consent to run for 000 Governor’ and illegally collected signatures.”
They continued, “Regarding the allegations of violating the Public Official Election Act, the Democratic Party camp involved and the accused party claim the allegations are groundless and baseless slander, despite the situation calling for restraint,” and demanded, “The Democratic Party’s prospective gubernatorial candidate should take responsibility for causing public unrest in the local community due to these allegations and offer an apology and a sincere statement of position to the residents.”
They also reiterated, “The Election Commission must conduct a strict and thorough investigation and fact-finding to clearly address the criticisms and suspicions of the local community.”
It is currently known that the provincial election commission is investigating the facts related to the allegations.
Meanwhile, Article 107 of the current Public Official Election Act (Prohibition of Signature and Seal Campaigns) stipulates that no one may obtain signatures or seals from voters for election campaigning. Violations of this provision constitute the crime of illegal election campaigning, punishable by imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 6 million won.
