Leading Efforts to Create a Clean Urban Environment Through Continuous Environmental Cleanup Activities
[Gwangyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks' 'The Green Environment Energy Talent Volunteer Group' conducted an environmental cleanup activity on the 22nd in observance of 'World Water Day,' taking time to reflect on the importance of water.
'World Water Day' was established and proclaimed by the United Nations to protect water resources amid the decreasing availability of drinking water due to environmental destruction caused by indiscriminate development and pollution of surrounding rivers and seas. It has been commemorated since 1993.
About 80 volunteers, including members of the Gwangyang Steelworks The Green Environment Energy Talent Volunteer Group and the Gwangyang Climate Environment Network, participated in the environmental cleanup activity that day.
They carried out a 'plogging campaign' along the coastline and roadside stretching 5 km from the west gate of Gwangyang Steelworks to the entrance road under the Yi Sun-sin Bridge, collecting discarded trash and waste materials.
The Gwangyang Steelworks The Green Environment Energy Talent Volunteer Group plans to continue conducting environmental cleanup activities around the steelworks area to improve water quality and create a clean urban environment.
Lee Bang-hyun, deputy head of the Environmental Resources Group at Gwangyang Steelworks, who participated in the volunteer work, said, "In observance of World Water Day, it was a meaningful volunteer activity to raise awareness of water resource conservation and the importance of drinking water, and to create an eco-friendly city through coastal environmental cleanup activities."
