Jeonbuk Province Passes Investment Review for World Calligraphy Biennale Hall Construction
292 Billion Won Invested in 2025... Constructed with 1 Basement Floor and 4 Above-Ground Floors
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 23rd that the project to build the World Calligraphy Biennale Hall, which has been promoted as a key project since 2020, recently passed the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The World Calligraphy Biennale Hall is planned to be constructed on the site within the current Korean Sori Culture Center, with a budget of 29.2 billion KRW (20.4 billion KRW from the national government, 8.8 billion KRW from the provincial government), consisting of one basement floor and four above-ground floors (7,933㎡), aiming to open in 2025.
Having conducted feasibility studies and shared property reviews last year, the Biennale Hall construction project is expected to proceed with design competitions and basic and detailed designs around May this year, start construction in 2023, and complete in the first half of 2025 following the approval of the central investment review.
Jeonbuk Province plans to establish a venue for the promotion of calligraphy that realizes the popularization, industrialization, and globalization of Korean calligraphy through the construction of the World Calligraphy Biennale Hall.
The Biennale Hall will be composed of educational, industrial, exhibition, and experiential areas to lead the systematic development of Korean calligraphy and secure the international competitiveness of the "World Calligraphy Jeonbuk Biennale," which has been held since 1999.
In particular, it plans to link with the adjacent Korean Sori Culture Center, encourage the residency of calligraphers and calligraphy organizations, and expand experiential and exhibition spaces for visitors, operating as a cultural and artistic space shared by calligraphers and residents.
Governor Song Ha-jin said, "We will diligently promote the construction of the Biennale Hall, a long-cherished project of calligraphers, to showcase the beauty and excellence of Korean calligraphy to the world and ensure it is used as an open artistic space for calligraphers and residents."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's central investment review is conducted for projects with a total budget of 30 billion KRW or more in metropolitan local governments.
