[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A Belgian man in his 30s who killed a teacher who humiliated him during his childhood was caught after 30 years.
According to recent reports from foreign media such as the UK Guardian and AFP, Gunter Uwents (37) confessed to the Belgian prosecution that he killed his teacher Maria Belliden (57).
Earlier, Belliden was found dead at her home near Antwerp, Belgium, in November 2020. The body showed signs of being stabbed 101 times. At the time, Belgian police ruled out robbery as the cause, as a wallet containing cash was left next to the body.
Subsequently, the police analyzed hundreds of DNA samples and conducted a large-scale investigation, but the culprit was not caught for 16 months, and the case remained unsolved.
Then, earlier this month, Uwents confessed the crime to a friend, who reported it to the police, leading to a breakthrough in the case.
After being arrested on the 12th (local time), Uwents provided his DNA sample, which matched the traces found at the murder scene.
During the police investigation, Uwents stated, "When I was 7 years old, I was bullied by friends, and even Belliden, who was my teacher at the time, ignored me," and "Whenever I raised my hand to present, she always called on other children, making me unhappy," AFP reported.
