50s Woman Given Probation for Smuggling Gold Bars Hidden in Underwear
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] A woman in her 50s who smuggled gold bars hidden in her underwear to Japan was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
Judge Oh Gidu of the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 1 announced on the 20th that A (56, female), who was indicted for violating the Customs Act, was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.
A was charged with smuggling 9.6 kg of gold bars worth approximately 480 million KRW hidden in her underwear from Incheon Airport to Fukuoka, Japan, 11 times from February 2017 to June of the following year.
It was investigated that she smuggled the gold bars to Japan after accepting an offer from a smuggling operator who promised to pay 100,000 KRW per gold bar as a fee, along with airfare and accommodation expenses.

Judge Oh stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Considering the number of offenses and the amount of gold bars smuggled," but also "taking into account that the defendant has no prior record, was only simply involved in the crime, and the profit gained was small."
