Samba and Hynix Recognize Small Giant 'Hanmir'... Perfect for Preventing Serious Accidents
Hanmir's patented material 'Silmagel'
Withstands heat over 1000℃
"Will contribute to public interest by reducing large fires"
Han Seung-woo and Han Mi-reu, CEOs, are applying heat to insulation material using their company's patented substance 'Silmagel'.
View original imageFounded in August 2009, Hanmir is an R&D specialized company dealing with energy and heat-related technologies. It develops various materials that prevent fires or enhance energy efficiency through nano ceramic coating technology. Han Seung-woo, CEO of Hanmir, said, "I received help from Russian scientists I met while working at a trading company," adding, "The idea started from commercializing materials used in spacecraft production to suit the market."
CEO Han worked at Hyosung Group since 1991 and then spent over ten years at a small trading company. Although he majored in economics, he recently earned a master's degree in chemical engineering from Inha University to gain expertise in the chemical materials field.
Hanmir's patented material, the ‘Silmagel’ fireproof adhesive, can withstand temperatures above 1000℃. In a recent interview with Asia Economy, CEO Han demonstrated Silmagel's effectiveness firsthand. When a torch was applied to regular styrofoam, it quickly caught fire and emitted black smoke, but the styrofoam treated with Silmagel only produced slight charring without burning or significant smoke.
CEO Han explained, "Even mixing just 5% Silmagel with 95% styrofoam to make insulation can significantly reduce casualties in case of fire," adding, "Silmagel is made of eco-friendly ingredients harmless to the human body, so it can be used safely."
Commonly used styrofoam and urethane insulation materials have been inexpensive but had the drawback of rapidly spreading flames during fires. The multiple casualties in the 2020 Icheon logistics warehouse fire were suspected to be caused by toxic gases from ‘cheap insulation materials.’ Since the end of last year, with the enforcement of amended building laws that significantly strengthen fire safety standards for architectural finishing and insulation materials, Hanmir has encountered a great opportunity. The company is also actively promoting Silmagel's effectiveness to companies responding to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
Hanmir’s developed ‘fireproof coating’ has been applied to Samsung Biologics cleanrooms, floors and walls of SK Hynix’s underground utility tunnels, and the output test site at Cheongju Air Force Base. CEO Han stated, "The Ministry of National Defense recognized that the fireproof coating is strong enough to withstand the tremendous heat generated behind fighter jets during takeoff." Moreover, Hanmir developed an ‘energy coating’ with high thermal conductivity and emissivity. This coating is used in LED substrates and electronic components of major companies like Samsung. The energy coating applied to the heat exchangers at POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks helps cool high-temperature wastewater quickly, resulting in cost savings.

The government has also recognized the company’s technological capabilities. Hanmir has carried out about 50 government policy projects worth 800 million to 1 billion KRW annually and was recently selected as a promising small and medium enterprise in Gyeonggi Province. CEO Han said, "We are confident that our energy control technology is superior to other companies," adding, "We will continue to operate our business in a way that contributes to public welfare by reducing large fire accidents and improving energy efficiency."
