iPhone SE Rival Debuts... Samsung to Hold 'Galaxy A Event' on 17th
No Specific Product Names Mentioned
A53 and A73 Expected to Be Unveiled
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Apple recently unveiled the new iPhone SE, and this week, new product lineups including the Galaxy A53, considered a 'rival' in this year's mid-range smartphone market, will be revealed. The A series, along with the budget M series, is a key product group responsible for Samsung Electronics' global smartphone market share.
Samsung Electronics announced through an official invitation that it will hold the 'Samsung Galaxy A Event 2022' online at 11 PM KST on the 17th.
In the invitation, Samsung Electronics introduced the Galaxy A series as "products equipped with features and designs that allow more users to experience Galaxy's unique technology." However, specific product names were not mentioned.
Based on previously released information, the Galaxy A53 and A73 series are expected to be showcased at this year's event. Around this time last year, the A52, A52 5G, and A72 were unveiled.
The A53 is anticipated to compete in the mid-range market this year against Apple's new iPhone SE, which was introduced on the 8th (local time). It is expected to be equipped with Samsung Electronics' Exynos 1200 AP. The device will feature a 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display and support a 120Hz refresh rate. The rear quad camera setup includes a 64-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The A53, like the A73, supports 25W fast charging, a 5000mAh battery capacity, and stereo audio.
The highest-spec model in the Galaxy A series, the A73, is expected to feature the Snapdragon 750G application processor (AP) and a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. It is likely to support 8GB of RAM and 128GB of memory capacity. The device will support up to 25W fast charging, the latest Wi-Fi standard Wi-Fi 6, and stereo audio. The battery capacity is expected to be 5000mAh. The camera setup includes a 32-megapixel punch-hole front (selfie) camera and a rear quad camera. The main camera will be the first in the A series to feature a 108-megapixel sensor.
The mid-range A series is a key product line that helps Samsung Electronics maintain a stable high market share in the global smartphone market. When combined with the M series, they account for 70-80% of total sales. In the 2021 global smartphone best-selling product rankings, the Galaxy A12 was the only Samsung product included among the top 10. Given that the flagship Galaxy S22 series recently faced issues with the Game Optimization Service (GOS), there is interest in whether Samsung can regain customer trust.
