The First Friday After Social Distancing Eased... Police Nationwide Crackdown on Drunk Driving
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency announced that on the 11th, the first Friday after the partial easing of social distancing measures that extended the operating hours of multi-use facilities from 10 PM to 11 PM, nationwide simultaneous drunk driving crackdowns will be conducted.
The crackdown will take place from 10 PM to midnight, around one hour before and after the closing time of multi-use facilities. Mobile spot checks (SPOT crackdowns) will be carried out at vulnerable locations by 258 police stations nationwide. The police plan to continue regular crackdowns after the designated hours, considering regional characteristics. The police explained the background of this crackdown, stating, "With the easing of social distancing, gatherings involving alcohol and drunk driving are expected to increase, so we decided to take proactive measures."

During the crackdown, the police will use contactless breathalyzers to minimize contact. Additionally, they plan to actively enforce penalties for accomplices riding in drunk driving vehicles and seize vehicles from habitual drunk drivers. A National Police Agency official emphasized, "Drunk driving is a serious crime that destroys not only individuals but also families and society as a whole," and urged, "We ask for your interest and participation in establishing traffic law and order."
