Chinese Two Sessions Successively Call for Strengthening Patriotic Education for Hong Kong Youth
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] On the 9th, Global Times reported that at the Chinese Two Sessions (Lianghui - National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), there was a proposal to strengthen patriotic education for Hong Kong youth.
According to the report, Jonathan Choi Kumsun, a member of the CPPCC, stated, "This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, making it a great opportunity to conduct comprehensive and in-depth patriotic education in Hong Kong." He added, "There was a suggestion to form an expert panel for joint curriculum development to ensure classes that reflect patriotic spirit and Hong Kong's local conditions."

Wong Kwan Wai, Vice Chairman of the NPC (and representative of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers), also emphasized that teachers are the core of patriotic education in schools and said that 'political identity' should be included in teachers' requirements. He said, "Last year, I visited over 40 schools and met with about 2,000 teachers, and many of them have a vague concept of the nation and do not clearly understand China's influence on Hong Kong," adding, "Education on the nation and the national flag should be strengthened in youth activities in Hong Kong."
